Cancer: Changing the Terrain, a Gentle, In-Depth Companion

A Gentle Word Before We Begin

If you or someone you love has been given a diagnosis of cancer, please take a slow breath before you read any further. You are not in an emergency of the kind that requires panic. You are in a season that requires steadiness, clarity, good support, and time. Fear is the one thing that will not help you here, and so the very first work, before any food or supplement or decision, is to bring the body out of panic and into a place calm enough to think, choose, and heal.

This article is written gently on purpose. It is meant to be read slowly, perhaps more than once, perhaps aloud with someone who loves you.

“Cancer is not a sudden invasion of a healthy body. It is a slow change in the body’s terrain, and terrain can be changed back.”

Within the Ancestral Regeneration Protocol, we understand cancer not primarily as a genetic accident or a piece of bad luck, but as something the body’s terrain has allowed, a terrain that became, over years, hospitable to cells that had lost their way. This is, in the deepest sense, hopeful news. A terrain that can be changed in one direction can be changed in the other. The body that grew this can also un-grow it, when the conditions that allowed it are steadily removed and the conditions that heal are steadily restored. Many people have walked this path. The work is real, it is slow, it is gentle, and it asks for everything, but it is not hopeless, and it is not yours to do alone.

Nothing in this article is a replacement for the relationship with your medical team. Many people choose to combine conventional oncology with the terrain work described here; many integrative cancer doctors actively support this combination, because a body whose terrain is being rebuilt tolerates conventional treatment better and recovers from it faster. Other people, with certain cancers and in certain circumstances, choose to work primarily with terrain. These are deeply personal decisions, made with good counsel, never made in fear, and never made alone.

Our work here is to describe the terrain side of the picture as fully and gently as we can.

Cancer as a Metabolic Condition: the Terrain Theory

For most of the last century, cancer was understood as primarily a genetic disease, a matter of mutations accumulating in the DNA until a cell began to divide without restraint. That picture is not wrong, but it is incomplete, and it has not, despite enormous effort, produced the cures that were promised.

A growing body of work, including the metabolic and terrain-based approach articulated clearly by Dr. Nasha Winters in her book The Metabolic Approach to Cancer, returns to an older and more useful understanding: cancer is, at its root, a metabolic condition. The mutations are real, but they are downstream. Upstream is a cell whose mitochondria, the energy organelles, have been damaged, and which has therefore reverted to a primitive, fermentative way of making energy.

There are said to be more than two hundred distinct types of cancer, and conventional medicine treats each as its own disease. For the purposes of changing the terrain, however, they have far more in common than they have differences. Almost every cancer cell, regardless of which tissue it began in, shares the same metabolic signature: it ferments glucose for energy even when oxygen is plentiful, it depends heavily on the amino acid glutamine, it produces and thrives in lactic acid, it requires a suppressed immune system to escape detection, and it grows fastest in a body that is inflamed, insulin-resistant, toxically burdened, hormonally imbalanced, and chronically stressed.

Because they share a terrain, they can, for our healing purposes, be addressed through a shared approach.

The Warburg effect: how cancer makes its energy

A healthy cell makes energy in its mitochondria, burning fat, glucose, or ketones cleanly with oxygen, producing around 36 units of ATP from a single glucose molecule. A cancer cell does something different. Even when oxygen is freely available, it ferments glucose in its cytoplasm, the fast, primitive, inefficient pathway, producing only 2 units of ATP per glucose and dumping lactic acid as the waste product. This is called the Warburg effect, after the scientist who described it nearly a century ago.

To make enough energy this wasteful way, the cancer cell must consume enormous quantities of glucose, which is exactly why conventional PET scans find tumors by looking for the places in the body that are taking up the most sugar.

This is the single most important and most hopeful fact in this whole article. The cancer cell is metabolically inflexible. It cannot easily run on ketones the way a healthy cell can. It is dependent, almost addicted, on glucose and glutamine. When we lower the glucose, lower the glutamine, lower the lactic acid, and shift the whole body into clean fat-burning ketosis, we are removing the cancer cell’s food and disturbing its environment, while the healthy cells of the body carry on perfectly well on ketones. We are not poisoning the body to reach the cancer. We are feeding the body in a way the cancer cannot follow.

The Terrains of Cancer: What We Are Actually Working With

The metabolic and terrain approach maps the conditions that allow cancer to take hold and grow. Working each of these terrains, gently and together, is the heart of the protocol. None of them is worked in isolation; all of them are part of one piece of work.

Blood sugar and insulin, high blood sugar feeds the Warburg fermentation directly; high insulin is itself a powerful growth signal that tells all cells, including cancer cells, to divide. Restoring metabolic flexibility and entering nutritional ketosis is foundational. (See our Blood Sugar and Insulin Resistance article.)

Toxic burden, heavy metals, glyphosate, plastics, solvents, mould mycotoxins, and other accumulated toxins damage the mitochondria and the DNA repair systems. Lowering the inputs and gently supporting the body’s own clearance is essential.

The microbiome, roughly 70% of the immune system lives in the gut wall; a disordered microbiome means a disordered immune system, and cancer requires a poorly functioning immune system to escape detection. Rebuilding the microbiome is rebuilding the body’s own cancer surveillance.

Immune function, the healthy body identifies and removes abnormal cells every day. Cancer becomes established only when the immune system has been suppressed, by stress, by poor sleep, by nutrient deficiency, by chronic infection, by sugar, by toxic load. Strengthening the immune system is central.

Inflammation, chronic inflammation is the soil cancer grows in. It drives angiogenesis, suppresses immune surveillance, and provides growth signals. Quieting inflammation through food, microbes, and the removal of inflammatory drivers is essential.

Blood vessel growth (angiogenesis), tumors recruit new blood vessels to feed themselves. A number of foods and the ketogenic state itself reduce this signalling.

Hormone balance, oestrogen excess drives many cancers; insulin and cortisol are growth signals; melatonin (made only in true darkness) is profoundly protective. Restoring hormonal balance and the natural light-dark rhythm is part of the work.

Stress and biological rhythms, chronic stress suppresses immunity and disturbs every healing rhythm; disrupted circadian rhythm (from artificial light, screens, shift work, poor sleep) lowers melatonin and disturbs cell repair. The nervous system work and light hygiene are not secondary, they are central.

Mental and emotional terrain, unprocessed grief, trapped fear, long-held resentment, isolation, and despair all show up in the body’s chemistry. The emotional terrain is as real as the metabolic one, and is worked with equal gentleness and seriousness.

Genetics and epigenetics, we cannot change the genes we were born with, but epigenetics, which genes are switched on and off, is shaped continuously by food, light, stress, toxins, and love. The terrain work is, in large part, epigenetic work.

What Cancer Requires and How We Remove It

Because cancer cells share a metabolic signature, they share a set of requirements. Each requirement is something we can address. We do not attack the cancer; we quietly, steadily remove what it needs and restore what the healthy body needs.

Glucose: the primary fuel

Cancer runs on glucose. We lower the available glucose by removing all sugar, all refined carbohydrate, all grains, all starchy foods, all sweet fruit, and all the hidden sugars in modern food, and by bringing the body into nutritional ketosis so that the healthy cells run on fat and ketones while the cancer cell, which cannot easily use ketones, loses its food.

The Keto-Mojo meter is used to confirm the state: we look toward a glucose of about 60 to 80 and ketones of about 2.0 and above as the optimal numbers in active cancer terrain work, reached gently and under good guidance, with adequate food and never through starvation. It can take a good while to reach there, and that is alright.

Glutamine and glutamate: the secondary fuel

When glucose is restricted, cancer cells lean on the amino acid glutamine as their backup fuel, and on glutamate, its excitatory cousin. We cannot, and would not want to, eliminate glutamine entirely, because the healthy body needs it. But we can lower the excess, avoid the foods and additives that flood the body with free glutamate (MSG and its many hidden names, hydrolyzed proteins, yeast extract, bone broth simmered very long, aged and fermented foods in large amounts, and the glutamate-heavy processed foods), and we can actively bring glutamate down with matcha green tea.

This is one of the reasons we use meat stock and never bone broth in ARP, meat stock, simmered only three to four hours, is gentle and low in free glutamate, while bone broth simmered for many hours becomes very high in free glutamate. For someone working a cancer terrain, this distinction matters.

Matcha: three cups a day to bring glutamate down

Matcha green tea is one of the most useful single tools we have for the glutamate terrain. It is rich in L-theanine, an amino acid that the body uses to convert excitatory glutamate into calming GABA, directly lowering the glutamate load. Matcha is also rich in EGCG, a polyphenol with well-studied effects on cancer-cell signalling, on biofilm and quorum-sensing disruption, and on feeding the friendly microbe Akkermansia.

When glutamate needs to come down, we use up to three cups of good-quality matcha per day, whisked into hot (not boiling) water, sipped slowly, away from meals (at least 30 minutes before a meal or two hours after, because the tannins reduce iron absorption). For those sensitive to caffeine, the amount and timing are adjusted; matcha is gentler and steadier than coffee, but it is still stimulating.

Omega-6 inflammatory fats: the fire that feeds it

Cancer uses certain omega-6-derived signalling molecules, particularly those of the arachidonic acid and inflammatory eicosanoid pathways, to drive inflammation, angiogenesis, and growth. We do not eliminate omega-6 entirely (the body needs a small amount), but we remove the enormous modern excess: all industrial seed oils (soybean, corn, canola, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, grapeseed, “vegetable oil”), all the processed foods made with them, and the meat of animals fed heavily on grain. We replace them with the stable animal fats the body was built for, tallow, lard, schmaltz, duck fat, goose fat, butter, ghee, and with the omega-3-rich small oily fish and shellfish. This single shift quiets a great deal of the inflammatory signalling cancer depends on.

Lactic acid: the environment it thrives in

The Warburg fermentation dumps lactic acid into the tissue around the tumor. This acidic environment is not a side effect, it is part of how cancer protects and propagates itself. The acid suppresses local immune cells, dissolves the surrounding tissue matrix so the tumor can spread, and signals for new blood vessels. A cancer cell in a low-lactic-acid, well-oxygenated, alkaline-buffered environment cannot replicate the way it does in its preferred acidic pocket.

Bringing the lactic acid down is one of the most direct things we do. We lower the lactic acid load through:

  • Nutritional ketosis, fat-burning produces far less lactic acid than glucose fermentation.
  • Bicarbonate of soda, ¼ to 1 teaspoon in warm water in the morning and ¼ to 1 teaspoon in the evening, always away from food, buffers the acidic load. (See our Acidosis article for the full bicarbonate protocol, including the descending burst pattern for flare times.)
  • Deep, slow breathing and gentle movement, oxygenate the tissue; cancer fermentation is partly a response to low local oxygen.
  • Clearing chronic infections, pathogens add their own organic acids to the load (see the pathogen section).
  • Thiamine (B1), the cofactor that lets pyruvate enter the mitochondria to be burned cleanly, rather than being converted to lactic acid. (See the B Ladder section.)
  • Generous mineral salt and a full electrolyte and mineral profile, the body buffers acid with minerals.

When the lactic acid comes down, the cancer cell loses both its food and its favoured environment. It cannot replicate the way it did. This is quiet, gentle, foundational work, and it costs almost nothing.

A suppressed immune system: the watchman it needs asleep

A healthy body identifies and clears abnormal cells continuously, this is happening in you, today, as it should. Cancer becomes established only when this surveillance has been suppressed. Everything in ARP that strengthens the immune system is therefore anti-cancer work: rebuilding the gut where 70% of immunity lives, restoring the birth microbes that train the immune system, clearing the chronic infections that exhaust it, restoring vitamin D and vitamin A and zinc and selenium, restoring deep sleep (the immune system does much of its work at night), lowering the chronic stress and cortisol that suppress it, and giving the body the abundant animal nutrition it needs to mount a strong response. We do not need to attack the cancer if we can wake the watchman.

Iron excess: a quiet driver

Many cancers are iron-hungry; iron drives the cell division and the oxidative reactions cancer uses. Where ferritin is high (well above the optimal range, see our Anaemia and Low Ferritin article for the optimal numbers), gently lowering iron stores can be supportive, through donating blood where appropriate, through lactoferrin (which regulates iron away from where it is not wanted), and through not over-supplementing iron. This is individual; iron must be assessed, not assumed. Many cancer patients are simultaneously anaemic from the illness and iron-loaded in the tissues, a careful picture that benefits from good testing.

Ketosis: the Foundation the Terrain Rests On

Nutritional ketosis is the metabolic foundation of cancer terrain work. It removes the cancer cell’s primary fuel, lowers insulin (a growth signal), lowers blood glucose, lowers inflammation, lowers lactic acid, and feeds every healthy cell in the body with the clean, stable fuel of fat and ketones.

The approach is sometimes described as “press-pulse”: a steady, sustained press of nutritional ketosis, with periodic gentle pulses of deeper therapeutic practice (such as a longer fast, when the body is strong enough, or other practices guided by an experienced practitioner).

The ARP way of entering and holding ketosis for cancer terrain work:

Approximate macros: moderate protein (around 60 to 80 g, adjusted to body size and need, enough to preserve muscle, not so much as to feed gluconeogenesis excessively), low carbohydrate (often under 20 to 30 g, all from gently cooked low-starch vegetables), and abundant animal fat as the main fuel.

Build animal fat slowly, 1 teaspoon per week, until the body settles into clean, comfortable fat-burning.

Monitor with a Keto-Mojo or similar home meter that reads both glucose and ketones. We do not use the glucose-ketone index; in cancer terrain work we look toward a glucose of about 60 to 80 and ketones of about 2.0 and above as the optimal numbers, reached gently, with adequate food, never through starvation, and ideally with the guidance of an experienced practitioner. It can take a good while to reach there, and that is alright.

Two meals a day once blood sugar is steady, often 10am and 2 or 3pm, and, once well fat-adapted and under good guidance, moving toward one meal a day, which deepens the therapeutic effect.

Never enter ketosis through under-eating. The cancer terrain body needs abundant nourishment, abundant fat, adequate protein, abundant minerals. Starvation weakens the immune system, which is the opposite of what we want. Fasting, when used, is used gently and only when the body is strong enough, never in a frail, underweight, or severely depleted body.

Ketosis is not extreme and it is not dangerous; it is the metabolic state our ancestors spent significant parts of every year in, and it is the state in which the healthy body thrives and the cancer cell struggles.

The Food: the ARP Menu and the Anti-Cancer Guide

The food is the daily foundation of everything. For cancer terrain work specifically, we recommend obtaining Mary Ruddick’s anti-cancer guide and food list from her website, and using it alongside the Ancestral Regeneration Protocol. Her guide gives the detailed, tested food list for cancer terrain work; the ARP framework gives the broader structure of rhythm, microbes, light, nervous system, and community. Together they are a complete picture.

Everything below is drawn from the ARP menu. We do not use bone broth (high in free glutamate); only meat stock, simmered three to four hours, gelatinous when cold, well-salted.

Animal foods (the foundation)

Meat stock, daily; gentle, low-glutamate, mineral-rich, gut-healing.

Ground meat, easy to digest.

Eggs, yolks first, soft-cooked in butter; choline, retinol, B12, cholesterol.

Meat on the bone, slow-cooked lamb, beef, chicken thighs; from well-raised, pasture-fed animals where possible.

Heart, kidney, spleen, early-protocol organ meats, nutrient-dense. (Liver later, once the body’s detoxification is working well.)

Small and oily fish (sardines, anchovies, mackerel, herring, wild salmon), omega-3, vitamin D, selenium.

Shellfish (oysters, mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp), zinc, copper, selenium, B12, all immune-supportive.

Bacon or sausage with no sugar, dextrose, or preservatives.

Animal fats (the main fuel, eaten generously)

Tallow, lard, schmaltz, duck fat, goose fat.

Butter and ghee from grass-fed cows.

Cold-pressed coconut oil and olive oil, added to warm food or drinks, not used to cook.

Fermented and raw dairy

24-hour fermented raw dairy, yogurt, kefir, cultured cream, whey, curds (in moderate amounts; very large quantities of long-aged fermented foods raise free glutamate).

Cheese fermented over 3 months with no added colour or flavour, in moderate amounts.

Vegetables (low-starch, cooked in fat or meat stock on low, covered, 30 minutes)

Cruciferous vegetables especially, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, rich in sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol, among the most studied anti-cancer plant compounds.

Carrots, onion, garlic, mushrooms, onion and garlic deliver sulfur compounds; certain mushrooms are immune-supportive.

Rutabaga, turnips, radish, avocado.

We set aside winter squash and other higher-starch vegetables during active cancer terrain work, to keep carbohydrate very low.

Fresh herbs, parsley, dill, thyme, oregano, basil, sage, rosemary.

Foraged greens such as dandelion leaves, gentle liver support.

Fermented vegetables, sauerkraut, fermented carrots, fermented garlic, in moderate amounts, begin with the brine.

Drinks

Matcha green tea, up to three cups daily when glutamate needs lowering; whisked in hot (not boiling) water, away from meals.

Chicory root tea, supports the liver in clearing hormones; feeds Bifidobacteria.

Loose herbal teas, lemon balm, nettle, holy basil; away from meals.

Mineral water (Gerolsteiner) or filtered water with mineral salt, sipped throughout the day.

Bicarbonate of soda in warm water, morning and evening, away from food.

What we set aside

All sugar, white, brown, coconut, dextrose, fructose, agave, honey, maple syrup, date syrup.

All industrial seed oils and the processed foods made with them.

Alcohol, a direct carcinogen and a glutamate and sugar source.

All grains, breads, pasta, rice, oats.

All potatoes and starchy tubers.

All sweet fruit and dried fruit and fruit juice (a small amount of low-sugar berries may return much later, well into recovery).

MSG and free glutamate in all its hidden forms, hydrolyzed protein, autolysed yeast, yeast extract, “natural flavours,” soy protein isolate, and bone broth simmered for many hours.

Beans, legumes, nuts, seeds, phytates and, for some, lectin load; set aside during active terrain work.

Glyphosate-treated foods, eat organic and pasture-raised wherever possible.

Processed and packaged food of every kind.

The Microbes: Rebuilding the Body’s Own Cancer Surveillance

The microbiome is one of the most powerful and most overlooked terrains in cancer. The gut microbes train the immune system, produce the anti-inflammatory compounds that quiet the cancer-promoting fire, maintain the gut barrier that keeps endotoxins out of the bloodstream, and, in the case of certain specific strains, directly support the body’s ability to recognise and respond to abnormal cells.

Several strains deserve particular mention.

Akkermansia muciniphila, the mucin-layer specialist. Akkermansia rebuilds the gut barrier and the tight junctions, supports metabolic flexibility, and has been found in research to be strongly associated with a well-functioning immune response, including the response to cancer immunotherapy. People whose guts carry good levels of Akkermansia respond markedly better to immune-based cancer treatment than those who do not. We rebuild Akkermansia through N-acetyl-glucosamine, colostrum, pomegranate polyphenols, the EGCG in matcha, hibiscus, and apple pectin, and, once tolerance is established, through a live Akkermansia supplement.

Bifidobacterium longum BB536, a foundational, well-studied Bifidobacterium strain that modulates the immune system, lowers inflammation, supports the gut barrier, and is associated with improved immune surveillance. One of the most important single strains to restore in cancer terrain work. Fed by HMOs, GOS, FOS, and inulin.

Butyrate-inducing microbes, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Roseburia intestinalis, Eubacterium, Anaerostipes, and the broader butyrate-producing guild. Butyrate is one of the most profoundly anti-cancer molecules the body makes. It is the preferred fuel of the healthy colon cell; it quiets inflammation; it induces apoptosis (the orderly, programmed death of abnormal cells) specifically in cancerous colon cells while nourishing the healthy ones; it supports the regulatory T-cells that govern the immune response. The butyrate guild is consistently depleted in cancer patients. We rebuild it slowly through PHGG (Sunfiber), inulin, arabinogalactan, apple pectin, and, as a temporary bridge while the guild returns, tributyrin, which delivers butyrate directly.

Lactobacillus and the wider birth-microbe family, for immune training, GABA and serotonin production, histamine balance, and the broad support of the gut-immune axis. (See our Birth Microbes article for the full picture of how these are restored.)

Rebuilding the microbiome follows the ARP sequence: mucosa rebuild first (meat stock, zinc carnosine, MSM, L. fermentum CECT5716, HMOs, B. subtilis HU58), then the four-layer pathogen protocol once the lining is sturdy, then the gentle feeding of the birth microbes and the butyrate guild.

The microbes are not a side note in cancer work. They are the immune system we are trying to wake.

Chronic Infections and Cancer

A significant proportion of cancers have a chronic infection somewhere in their story, an organism that drove the years of inflammation and immune distraction that allowed the terrain to change. The four-layer ARP pathogen protocol, NAC, then the matched quorum-sensing disruptor (ajoene, berberine, or quercetin), then the matched antagonist strain plus lactoferrin, addresses these once the mucosa has been rebuilt.

Epstein-Barr virus, associated with several lymphomas and nasopharyngeal cancer.

Hepatitis B and C, liver cancer.

Porphyromonas gingivalis, gum-disease organism associated with pancreatic and other cancers.

Helicobacter pylori, the strongest single risk for stomach cancer and certain lymphomas.

Human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical and several other cancers; the immune system clears HPV in most people, and a strong terrain supports that clearing.

Fusobacterium nucleatum, strongly associated with colorectal cancer; an oral organism that translocates to the gut.

Certain parasites and chronic bacterial infections, add their inflammatory and acid load.

Chronic Candida and mould mycotoxin exposure, drive inflammation and immune suppression.

We do not use binders internally. The body, when fed and seeded properly, clears its own load through detox baths, body scans, sun, grounding, mineral water, and the meat-stock-and-animal-fat menu. The full step-by-step heavy-metal and mould detox protocol, important in cancer terrain work, is shared inside the Ancestral Regeneration Protocol Facebook group, where it can be paced and supported for each person.

Lowering the Toxic Burden

Toxins damage the mitochondria and the DNA-repair machinery; lowering the toxic input is part of changing the terrain. We begin always with removing the inputs, gently, before any active detoxification, and we never begin deep metal or mould detox in a body that is not yet strong enough.

Filter drinking and bathing water, remove chlorine, fluoride, and contaminants.

Replace conventional cleaning products with simple, natural ones, vinegar, baking soda, mineral salt, castile soap.

Address any mould in the home, water-damaged buildings are a serious and under-recognised driver.

Reduce non-native EMF, hard-wired internet, phone on airplane mode at night, distance from the body.

Eat organic and pasture-raised wherever possible, lower the glyphosate and pesticide load.

Replace plastic food storage and cookware with glass, stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic, and enamel.

Replace conventional personal-care products, simplify the bathroom shelf; remove fragrance, parabens, sulfates, and formaldehyde-releasers.

Address mercury amalgam fillings, when the body is strong enough, with a SMART-trained biological dentist (see our Holistic Dental and Gum Care article).

Daily detox baths, Epsom salt and baking soda and sea salt; vitamin C powder and bentonite in the bath water only if the tap is chlorinated or fluoridated.

Castor oil packs over the liver, done overnight, support the liver’s own clearance pathways.

Hormones, Light, and the Rhythm of Healing

Several hormones are part of the cancer terrain. Insulin and cortisol are growth and stress signals; oestrogen excess drives many cancers; and melatonin, made by the body only in true darkness, is one of the most protective substances the body produces. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant, it regulates the cell cycle, it supports apoptosis of abnormal cells, and it is profoundly anti-cancer. The modern world, lit up at night and dim in the day, has collapsed melatonin production in almost everyone.

Bare-eye sunrise viewing within an hour of waking, sets the cortisol and melatonin rhythm for the whole day.

Midday sun in moderation, with hat and clothing rather than sunscreen.

Bed before 10pm; a regular schedule; a window open for cool, fresh air.

Cooked cruciferous vegetables daily, support healthy oestrogen metabolism.

Abundant bare-skin sun through the day, vitamin D is strongly protective; aim for blood 25(OH)D of 60 to 80 ng/mL.

Afternoon and sunset light with bare eyes.

After sundown, only candlelight, salt lamps, or firelight, no screens, or amber/red glasses if truly unavoidable.

Sleep in complete, total darkness, this is when melatonin is made and when the immune system does much of its cancer-surveillance work. Not a glimmer of light. Cover or remove every glowing device.

Daily raw grated carrot with olive oil and daily chicory tea, support the liver in clearing excess oestrogen and cortisol.

Castor oil packs over the liver and lower belly, support hormone clearance.

Time in Nature, Sleeping on the Ground, and Natural Materials

One of the strongest and gentlest medicines in cancer terrain work is also one of the oldest: a return to the natural world. We ask, where the body’s energy and circumstances allow, for an immense amount of time in nature, not as a pleasant extra, but as treatment.

Spend as many hours as possible outdoors, in sun, under trees, near moving water, on the earth. The volatile compounds released by trees (phytoncides) measurably raise the activity of natural killer cells, the immune cells most directly involved in clearing abnormal cells. A few days in a forest can raise natural killer cell activity for weeks.

Bare feet on the earth, daily, for as long as possible. Grounding reduces inflammation, improves heart-rate variability, discharges accumulated electrical load, and improves sleep, all measurable.

Sleep on the ground as often as you can, on a natural-fibre mat or blanket on the earth, on a porch, in a tent, under the stars when the weather and your body allow. Sleeping in direct or near-direct contact with the earth deepens grounding through the whole long restorative night, regulates the body temperature and the nervous system, and connects the body to the earth’s rhythms in a way that beds raised on synthetic frames cannot. Where sleeping fully on the ground is not possible, sleep as low and as close to the earth as you can, on natural materials, with a window open.

Remove synthetic materials from close contact with the body. Sleep on natural fibres, cotton, linen, wool, hemp, silk; a natural mattress of wool, kapok, or natural latex rather than synthetic foam. Wear natural fibres against the skin. Synthetic fabrics hold static charge, off-gas, and block the skin’s exchange with the air and the earth; natural fibres let the body breathe and stay in contact with the natural electrical environment it was built for.

Open the windows. Let in fresh air, daylight, birdsong, and the sounds of the natural world. Indoor air is often far more polluted than outdoor air.

Garden, if you have the energy, hands in living soil, the small daily re-seeding of friendly microbes, the gentle purposeful movement, the sun, the connection to growing things.

A word on the soil itself, wherever soil is involved, whether hands in the garden, bare feet on the earth, or food pulled from the ground, it should be regenerative, living soil: the kind in which a healthy web of life keeps pathogens naturally to a minimum. And where a person’s own terrain is very poor and depleted, we use wisdom about soil contact in places known for a higher parasite presence, going gently until the terrain is stronger.

Swim in natural water where it is safe and the body is able, cold, living water (a river, a lake, the sea) is both grounding and a gentle, regulating cold therapy. Some people have made wild swimming a central part of their own healing.

Community: One of the Most Powerful Medicines

Do not underestimate this. Of all the things that have been studied in relation to who survives a cancer diagnosis and who does not, social connection is among the very strongest. The body in loving connection heals; the body in isolation, fear, and stress does not, no matter how perfect the food. This is not sentimentality, it is measurable immune biology. Connection raises oxytocin, lowers cortisol, calms the nervous system out of the survival state, and frees the immune system to do its work.

If you have the energy, be with as many gentle, relaxed, kind people as you can. Choose the company of those who are calm, who do not amplify fear, who can simply be present with you without needing you to be anything.

Let people help. Receiving care is part of the healing, not a failure. Let meals be brought, let hands be held, let the burden be shared.

Step back, where you can, from relationships and situations that are draining, frightening, or full of conflict, at least for this season. The nervous system cannot heal while it is bracing.

Shared meals, eaten slowly, with gratitude, in good company, are medicine, not just nutrition.

Be touched, held, hugged, hands held, gently massaged. Safe human touch lowers cortisol and raises oxytocin directly.

If isolation is unavoidable for a season, bring in connection any way you can, calls, letters, the company of animals, the felt presence of those who love you, prayer.

Faith community, prayer with others, singing together, sitting in silence together, the gathered human community has always been part of how people heal.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Acupressure and the Emotional Terrain

In TCM, the conditions that allow a mass to form are most often read as long-standing Qi and Blood stagnation (energy and blood that have stopped moving freely), Phlegm and Damp accumulation (the body’s fluids congealing where they should flow), and underlying deficiency of the Spleen, Kidney, and the body’s upright Qi (the Zheng Qi, the body’s own protective, ordering force). The work is to move what is stuck, transform what has accumulated, and tonify the body’s own deep strength.

Press each point for 30 to 60 seconds with steady, calm pressure.

Trapped emotions and the cancer terrain

Each TCM organ holds an emotion that can become trapped when it has nowhere to go, and the long-held emotion becomes, over years, a stagnation in the body’s energy and blood. The cancer terrain very often carries: long-held grief in the Lung (the loss that was never fully grieved, and the lung and large intestine in TCM are the organs of letting go); unexpressed or unresolved anger and resentment in the Liver (the Liver governs the free flow of Qi throughout the body, and resentment held for years is one of the most direct causes of the stagnation TCM describes); fear in the Kidney (the depletion of the deep reserves); and worry in the Spleen (the rumination that weakens the centre).

This is not to say that anyone caused their cancer with their feelings, that is a cruel and untrue idea, and we reject it completely. It is to say, gently, that the emotional terrain is real, that long-trapped emotion is part of the body’s whole picture, and that giving those emotions somewhere to go, through body scans, slow time, hand-written journaling, tears, song, prayer, confession, forgiveness work, the company of safe people, and the points below, is part of the healing, and a gift you give yourself.

LV 3 / Tai Chong (top of foot, between first and second toe), the master point for moving stuck Liver Qi; eases resentment and frustration; one of the most important points for the stagnation terrain.

LI 4 / He Gu (web between thumb and index), moves Qi and Blood throughout the body; releases what is stuck. Avoid in pregnancy.

Ren 17 / Tan Zhong (centre of the chest), opens the chest, softens grief, releases the Lung.

SP 6 / San Yin Jiao (above the inner ankle), harmonises Spleen, Liver, and Kidney; moves and tonifies together.

KI 3 / Tai Xi (inner ankle), tonifies the deep Kidney reserves.

Ren 6 / Qi Hai (below the navel), the “sea of Qi”; tonifies the body’s original strength.

LU 1 / Zhong Fu (upper outer chest), the front-mu point of the Lung; for grief held in the chest.

ST 36 / Zu San Li (below the knee), tonifies the body’s upright Qi, the Spleen, digestion, and immunity; one of the great strengthening points.

KI 1 / Yong Quan (sole of the foot), the most grounding point in the body; answers fear; brings the energy down.

Ren 4 / Guan Yuan (between Ren 6 and the pubic bone), tonifies original Qi and Kidney essence.

HT 7 / Shen Men and Yin Tang (between the brows), calm the spirit, ease anxiety, support sleep.

Daily gentle massage along the Bladder channel either side of the spine, with warm hands and a little tallow balm, supports the back-shu points of every major organ and settles the autonomic nervous system.

Movement: Gentle, Oxygenating, Lymph-Moving

Cancer fermentation is partly a response to low oxygen in the tissue; gentle movement that oxygenates and that moves the lymph (the lymphatic system is a major route of immune surveillance) is supportive. We do not use cardio, HIIT, or running, they raise cortisol and lactic acid and stress an already-burdened body. We use slow, rhythmic, oxygenating, grounding movement.

Bouncing on the earth with bare feet, gentle, rhythmic; the single best lymph mover; 5 to 10 minutes, less if the body is frail.

Slow walks outdoors, in the sun, barefoot on grass or earth, breathing slowly through the nose; among the most healing things you can do.

Dry skin brushing toward the heart, moves lymph; before a warm bath.

Gentle fascia work, fascia balls under the feet and along the spine; slow myofascial release; long, soft holds.

Slow, undirected dance, to Mozart, Vivaldi, Gregorian chant, drum, or the sound of water.

Self-lymphatic massage, slow strokes from extremities toward the collarbones; behind the ears; under the jaw; can be done lying down.

Castor oil packs, over the liver, and over the lower belly, done overnight; move lymph and support clearance.

Deep, slow breathing, left-nostril breathing, slow box breathing; oxygenates the tissue and calms the nervous system.

Swimming in natural water, where the body is able and the water is safe; gentle, grounding, oxygenating.

Rest, as much as the body asks for. Rest is not idleness; rest is when the immune system and the repair systems do their deepest work. Match the movement to the day; on hard days, rest fully and without guilt.

On Skin Cancers and Black Salve

For cancers of the skin specifically, surface lesions that can be reached topically, one traditional tool is black salve, an escharotic preparation with a long folk history. Where black salve is chosen for a skin cancer, we recommend the Zenith Herbal brand and following the directions provided on their website exactly. Black salve is a serious preparation: it works by drawing and removing affected tissue, the process can be intense, and proper technique, timing, wound care, and aftercare matter enormously. Use only a trusted source, follow the manufacturer’s directions precisely, and do this work with good support around you, not alone and not improvised. Black salve is for skin lesions only, it is not a treatment for internal cancers. Any skin lesion that is new, changing, or concerning is also worth having properly assessed, so that you know what you are working with before you choose your path.

Supplements in Cancer Terrain Work

Food, light, sleep, nature, microbes, and community are the foundation. Supplements fill specific gaps and support specific terrains. Each is introduced slowly, one at a time, ideally with the guidance of an experienced integrative practitioner who can tailor the picture to the specific situation.

Foundational

Cod liver oil and high-vitamin butter oil (or DaVinci ADK), vitamins A, D, K2, EPA, DHA, immune-supportive and anti-inflammatory.

Vitamin D3 with K2, one of the most studied protective nutrients; aim for blood 25(OH)D of 60 to 80 ng/mL.

Zinc carnosine with copper, 10:1 to 15:1 ratio; immune support and mucosa rebuild.

Magnesium, 400 to 600 mg daily, glycinate or threonate, plus magnesium chloride and Epsom baths.

Selenium, 100 to 200 mcg daily; glutathione cofactor; protective.

Iodine, started very low; supports the thyroid and the whole metabolism; restore selenium first.

Boron (at least 30 mg per day), mineral, hormone, and fluoride-clearance support.

Bicarbonate of soda, ¼ to 1 teaspoon (build up slowly) morning and evening in warm water, away from food, to buffer lactic acid.

Electrolytes, potassium and magnesium, alongside the bicarbonate and the morning mineral water, we replenish potassium and magnesium every day. Citrate forms are gentle and well absorbed for most people; those with mast cell activation sometimes cannot tolerate citrates and use other forms. Potassium is built up slowly, some people need to climb toward 4,000 mg a day, and magnesium is taken up to bowel tolerance. The full electrolyte recipe is shared in the Ancestral Regeneration Protocol Facebook group.

Tapioca-based vitamin C, 500 to 2,000 mg daily, divided; immune support and collagen.

MSM, from the beginning, 1 g/day building by 1 g/week to 3 to 5 g/day in divided doses; sulfur for glutathione and connective tissue.

Terrain-specific support

Matcha green tea, up to three cups daily for the glutamate terrain; EGCG and L-theanine.

CoQ10 (ubiquinol), mitochondrial support; 200 to 400 mg daily with fat.

Glutathione (liposomal, started low) and NAC, the body’s master antioxidant and its precursor.

Curcumin, anti-inflammatory and well-studied in cancer terrain, note that curcumin lowers ferritin, so it is set aside if anaemia or low ferritin is also present (see our Anaemia article).

Medicinal mushrooms (turkey tail, reishi, chaga, maitake), long traditional and modern use for immune support in cancer; reishi also calms the nervous system.

Vitamin A (retinol), from cod liver oil and organ meats; supports cell differentiation and immunity.

Omega-3 (EPA/DHA), from small oily fish and cod liver oil; quiets the inflammatory eicosanoid pathways cancer uses.

The full B Ladder, B1 and B2 first (B1 is essential to keep pyruvate moving into the mitochondria and lactic acid down), then the rest in order, see the B Ladder section. Never a generic B-complex.

Lactoferrin, the primary toxin neutraliser in the pathogen protocol; also regulates iron away from where it is not wanted.

Cruciferous concentrates (sulforaphane, indole-3-carbinol), from cooked cruciferous vegetables and, where helpful, concentrated supplement form.

Melatonin, made by the body in true darkness; some integrative practitioners also use supplemental melatonin in cancer terrain work, this is individual and best guided.

The microbes

L. fermentum CECT5716, HMOs, B. subtilis HU58, the mucosa-rebuild foundation.

Akkermansia muciniphila, for the gut barrier and immune response; once tolerance is established.

Bifidobacterium longum BB536, for immune modulation and surveillance.

Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745, for Candida and parasites.

Tributyrin and the butyrate-guild feeders (PHGG, inulin, arabinogalactan, apple pectin), to restore the profoundly anti-cancer butyrate.

The B Ladder

B-complexes are problematic; we replace B vitamins in a specific order, with B1 and B2 always first because B2 activates B6, folate, and B3, and B1 keeps pyruvate moving into the mitochondria and lactic acid down.

B1 benfotiamine slowly to 2,600 mg over 9 months; B2 400 mg for 5 months; B3 non-flush 1,000 mg for 6 months to a year; B5 pantothenic acid 500 → 1,000 mg for 3 to 6 months; B6 50 mg for 3 to 6 months (P-5-P 25 → 100 mg if hormone, immune, mental, or neurotransmitter dysfunction); B9 methylfolate 1 → 5 mg slowly with B12 added at the same time; B12 methylcobalamin only, 500 mcg per day for 6 months to 1 year. (Folate dosing in active cancer is one of the areas best individualized with an experienced practitioner.)

Laughter and Beauty: Do Not Underestimate Them

Laughter raises natural killer cell activity, the very immune cells that clear abnormal cells, measurably, within an hour. It lowers cortisol, raises endogenous opioids, fires the vagus nerve, and shifts the whole body out of the survival state and into the state where healing happens.

Beauty does the same through a different door.

These are not distractions from the serious work. They are the serious work.

Ten minutes of real laughter every day, silly stories, family play, animal videos, comedies you have loved, the company of friends who make you laugh out loud.

Look at beautiful things every day, art that moves you, a flower up close, the faces of those you love, the colour of the sky at dawn, a garden, the sea.

Listen to beautiful things, birdsong, Gregorian chant, Mozart, Vivaldi, the sound of water, the voice of someone you love reading aloud.

Sing, hum, and be sung to, alone or with others; lullabies, hymns, the songs of your childhood.

Make room for joy without guilt. Joy is not frivolous in a serious season. Joy is immune medicine.

Surround yourself with beauty, a clean, light room; flowers; an icon or photograph; a candle; fresh natural-fibre sheets; an open window.

People Have Walked This Path

It matters to know that people have changed their cancer terrain through ancestral and metabolic means, sometimes alongside conventional treatment, sometimes primarily through terrain work. There are people who reversed serious cancers by returning to a deeply ancestral way of life: real food, abundant time in cold rivers and wild nature, profound rest, the removal of the modern toxic and stressful inputs, the restoration of connection and purpose. One well-known example is a man who, given a serious blood cancer diagnosis, turned to long-distance wild swimming, raw and ancestral food, and immersion in nature, and saw his cancer recede. He is not alone.

The point is not that any one person’s path is a prescription, it is that the terrain is genuinely changeable, that the body genuinely retains the capacity to heal, and that hope is not naïve. It is biologically reasonable.

Do not underestimate the tenets of ARP. Each one, the food, the meat stock, the animal fat, the ketosis, the microbes, the sun, the grounding, the sleep, the body scans, the slow time, the community, the laughter, the prayer, the beauty, the nervous system work, looks small on its own. Together, practised faithfully, day after day, they change the terrain of the body. That is the whole work. It is gentle. It is slow. It is real.

A Sample Day for Cancer Terrain Work

Wake before 7am. Lie quietly for a few minutes; do not bolt up. One hand on the heart, one on the belly; three slow breaths; a gentle word to yourself: “Today, I am safe. My body knows how to heal.”

Bare-eye sunrise viewing, outside if possible, or from an open window. A cup of matcha, whisked slowly, sipped away from food. Long, slow time outdoors, under trees, near water, on the earth; bare feet on the ground; bare skin in the sun. Gentle cold water on the face, hands, and feet, or a wild swim if you are able and the season allows.

Warm water with mineral salt and lemon if tolerated; bicarbonate of soda ¼ to 1 teaspoon in warm water away from food. Hand-written gratitude journaling, five things, slowly, by hand. Morning body scan, a full hour where possible; the body learns it is safe. Gentle movement, bouncing on the earth with bare feet, a slow barefoot walk in the morning sun.

First meal around 10am: meat stock; soft-cooked eggs in butter; heart or kidney pâté; cooked cruciferous vegetables and onion and garlic in animal fat; cultured cream; sauerkraut brine. Cod liver oil and butter oil (or DaVinci ADK); zinc with copper; selenium; magnesium; B1 and B2; CoQ10; tapioca vitamin C. Most supplements with food.

A second cup of matcha if glutamate-lowering is needed; chicory tea. Time with gentle, relaxed, loving people, a shared meal, a held hand, an unhurried conversation. Laughter and beauty, ten minutes of real laughter; time with something beautiful to see and hear. Acupressure, LV 3, LI 4, Ren 17, ST 36, KI 3, KI 1.

Afternoon meal around 2 or 3pm: meat on the bone or ground meat in tallow; small oily fish or oysters; cooked low-starch vegetables; soft-cooked egg yolk; daily raw grated carrot with olive oil. A third cup of matcha if needed (not too late in the day). Pathogen protocol (once mucosa is rebuilt), Hour 0 NAC, Hour 1 matched QSD, Hour 2 matched antagonist with lactoferrin, run on rising or mid-afternoon, away from food.

Late afternoon, bouncing on the earth with bare feet; dry skin brushing; warm Epsom and baking soda bath; castor oil pack over the liver to be worn overnight. Afternoon and sunset light with bare eyes.

Slow left-nostril breathing; bicarbonate of soda ¼ to 1 teaspoon in warm water an hour before bed; magnesium glycinate; glycine in evening stock; lemon balm or passionflower tea.

Sleep, on the ground or as low and close to the earth as possible, on natural fibres, in complete darkness, window open. Bed before 10pm. Evening body scan into sleep, a full hour.

Evening, candlelight only; Gregorian chant or family song; a story read aloud; quiet prayer or silence; the company of those you love.

A Closing Word

If you have carried fear while reading this, set it down now, gently, the way you would set down something heavy you had been carrying too long. Fear is the one thing that does not help here. The body cannot heal while it is braced and afraid; it heals when it is fed, rested, sunned, grounded, loved, and allowed to feel safe. The very first and most important work, before the food, before the supplements, before any decision, is to come out of panic and into a steady, clear, supported place. From that place, every other choice becomes possible.

Cancer is a change in the body’s terrain, and terrain can be changed. The cancer cell is metabolically fragile in ways the healthy body is not, dependent on glucose and glutamine, drowning in its own lactic acid, dependent on a sleeping immune system and an inflamed, toxic, exhausted body. Every tenet of the Ancestral Regeneration Protocol removes one of those conditions and restores one of the conditions of health.

The food. The meat stock. The animal fat. The ketosis. The matcha. The microbes, Akkermansia, BB536, the butyrate guild. The sun. The earth under your bare feet and your sleeping body. The natural fibres. The deep dark sleep. The body scans and the slow time. The gentle people around you. The laughter. The beauty. The prayer.

None of these is small.

Do this work gently. Do it with good support, a medical team you trust, an experienced integrative practitioner where possible, and people who love you. Do it without panic and without rushing. Do not do it alone.

And do not underestimate what the body, given back the conditions it was built for, is able to do.

“The body that grew this in a changed terrain can un-grow it in a terrain changed back. Feed the body, calm the body, love the body, give it the sun and the earth and good company and time, and let it do the work it has always known how to do.”
